The exhibition highlights Bailey’s 2026 visual investigations, featuring selections from recent series including Adventures in Isotopy, Primitives, and Superposition. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Bailey engages in an intimate dialogue with the canvas plane, exploring the essential distinctions between reductive and subtractive perceptual strategies.

 

His paintings navigate the delicate equilibrium between the liturgical and the lyrical—acting as visual poles across which capacities for focused attention, appreciation, and wonder migrate. Through works such as Interrogate the substrate, Welcome the flies, and Pay more attention to less, Bailey invites viewers to pause and re-examine the relationship between mark, space, and quiet contemplation.

 

"Being reductive and being subtractive are profoundly different perceptual strategies," notes Bailey regarding his process. "This work reflects an exercise in taking attentive notes when the substrate describes itself to you—migrating between poles of focused attention and wonder."
