About the Event
Experience the rich tradition of Oklahoma-style Cherokee basket weaving honoring Native American Heritage Month.
Join Melanie Packer Schneider, Cherokee Nation citizen (Oklahoma) and traditional river cane basket weaver, to learn the basics of Oklahoma Cherokee basket weaving in this hands-on workshop. You’ll learn to start, shape, and finish a commercial cane double wall basket using natural and dyed round reed, and take home at least one basket that you have completed yourself. Students will also get an overview of the history of Cherokee basket making materials from pre-European contact through to contemporary North Carolina and Oklahoma Cherokee basket weaving. We will be working with wet reed, so please bring a towel.
